ADHD: Beyond Tutoring |
|
For years Casey struggled in school. Despite the fact that she received weekly tutoring, she just couldn’t seem to get caught up. “Everything [except P.E.] was a struggle,” Casey said. “I knew I was smart, but in school I just couldn’t succeed. Even with the hours and hours of extra tutoring, each year school seemed to get harder and harder. It was very frustrating.”
For Casey and a growing number of students in the 21st Century, tutoring has proven to be time-consuming, frustrating and painfully ineffective. While many of these children struggle with challenges such as Dyslexia or ADD, many more have no official diagnosis and exhibit no significant challenges outside of the classroom.
Of those students that received extensive tutoring, many showed little or no significant improvement. And for many of these students like Casey, tutoring became a way of life, continuing on for years. It begs the question, “Is there a 21st Century solution to the struggles being faced by these 21st Century students?”
The answer is an undeniable, “Yes!” Rooted in 30 years of research and practical application, the combined fields of Neuro-Linguistics, Neuro-Kinetics and Neuro-Sensory instruction are helping today’s students apply their talents and abilities to make learning easier, faster and even more fun.
At facilities like the Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center (NLC) in El Dorado Hills, students like Casey are taught to improve their focus and concentrate, reduce their stress, organize their thoughts, manage their time, set goals and self-motivate. Essential learning skills like speed-reading, advanced memorization, writing composition, test-preparation and test-taking, enable these children to succeed where many previously failed (even with extensive tutoring).
When asked about these 21st Century children, Gerald Hughes, Director of the NLC said, “This new age of Children must be given the skills to succeed in this century. And like the horse and buggy, it’s time lay aside those tired old flash cards, outdated phonics programs and other 19th Century tutoring methods. These kids don’t need band aids; they need and deserve real-world solutions to real-world problems. They need the tools to succeed in the 21st Century .”
After only 12 weeks at the NLC, Casey brought her GPA from 1.4 to 3.5 (a new NLC record). “Now I have the skills to do good [in school],” says Casey. “I’m more focused, organized and I can memorize just about anything. I even have time to do other stuff. It’s pretty awesome.”
While not every student achieves a 2.1 increase in their GPA, a 1.0 to 1.5 increase is fairly typical. Once given the tools to learn, studying becomes easier, test scores increase and even homework gets done without the struggle.
And unlike traditional tutoring which is substantially content-based, these process-based learning skills and strategies can be applied to virtually any subject at any time in any place.
Says Gerald Hughes, “It’s simply a matter of providing students with the right tools for the right job. Students take control of their own education—tutoring simply becomes unnecessary.”
