Dyslexia and Reading

Dyslexia is NOT something you are.
The symptoms of Dyslexia are not the result of brain damage or mental disability. The difficulties in reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, etc., are generally the result of a unique disorientation experienced by virtually every dyslexic.

Additionally, at least some of the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) are also often the result of the same type of mental disorientation that virtually every dyslexic experiences.

Dyslexia is something you DO.
Dyslexia is a strategy or combination of strategies which result in a specific range of symptoms which can often interfere with important aspects of learning--typically reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The bad news is that many of the current tutoring and remedial teaching methods do little more than reinforce compulsive behaviors that will eventually cripple the dyslexic child for life. Rather than helping the child, standard teaching methods typically repackage the information or simply spoon-feed the information to the child.

Despite the inappropriateness of these teaching strategies, many children manage to make some progress, thereby reinforcing dependence upon these inappropriate strategies. In almost all cases, however, the disorientation and  resultant symptoms remain.

This seams especially true for some phonics-based programs. While the dyslexic child will often appear to make progress, many dyslexic children will continue to struggle with reading and spelling despite many hours of additional phonics-based instruction.

The good news for those with dyslexia is that the symptoms they experience seem to be the result of self-generated strategies for processing, storing and recalling information. These symptoms, therefore, are fully addressable through competent and appropriate therapy.

The Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center has several programs which address the effects of Dyslexia.
